A golf handicap index is calculated from your best scoring differentials across recent rounds. Each differential is computed from your adjusted gross score, the course rating, and the slope rating of the tee box you played. The World Handicap System (WHS) averages the best 8 of your most recent 20 differentials and multiplies by 0.96.
You can get an estimate with as few as 3 rounds, but a full 20-round history gives the most accurate picture of your handicap index. The more rounds you enter, the better this calculator reflects your true ability.
The average golf handicap for men is around 14, and around 27 for women. A handicap under 10 is generally considered a skilled golfer, while scratch (0) or plus handicap golfers play at or better than par. Beginner golfers often start with a handicap of 30 or higher.
